Presidential hopeful and former football player Senator George Weah has called on Gabonese President Ali Bongo in Libreville ahead of Liberia’s October elections.
Weah, who is leading a three-party coalition in the elections, said his visit to Libreville on Thursday was to discuss “basic politics” with Bongo who is “a man of peace”.
“I am honoured to be in Gabon for the first time and I am happy for this visit as we discussed peace … We discussed basic politics and the peace and stability in our countries,” he told Gabonese media after the meeting.
Weah was in the central African country with his running mate Senator Jewel Howard Taylor who also held discussions with Gabonese government officials.
President Bongo praised Weah for his continuous fight to lead his people despite the challenges they face.
This is the second visit of George Weah to an African president after his visit to Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo in February calling on him to help ensure the October polls in Liberia are free and fair.
This is the third attempt to the presidency by Weah who run in 2005 losing to Sirleaf in the second round of voting. In 2011 he run again as a vice-presidential candidate on the ticket of Winston Tubman but failed.
